Four-time Oscar nominee and “Lady Bird” star embraces new role as mother-to-be alongside husband Jack Lowden after intimate Edinburgh wedding last summer.
Irish actress Saoirse Ronan and her husband Jack Lowden are expecting their first baby, according to exclusive information obtained by the Irish Independent.
An insider familiar with the couple has confirmed the news, revealing that both Saoirse and Jack are “thrilled” about their forthcoming addition. The couple, who got married in a private ceremony in Edinburgh the previous summer, were joined by only their closest companions for the intimate event.
From Co-stars to Life Partners
The Carlow native Ronan (31), who has earned four Oscar nominations throughout her Hollywood career, first encountered British actor Lowden (34) while filming “Mary Queen of Scots 2018”. In the historical drama, she portrayed Mary Stuart, while he took on the role of Lord Darnley, Mary’s second spouse.
Previously, Lowden has spoken about his experience working with Ronan as “extraordinary”.
“She’s an absolute powerhouse, both in front of the camera and behind it, completely unafraid and a brilliant leader as well,” he remarked.

Mutual Admiration and Family Dreams
In response to Lowden’s praise, Ronan shared with Harper’s Bazaar: “Receiving such recognition from someone I hold in such high regard means more to me than anyone else’s words.”
During a conversation with British Vogue in the previous year, Ronan expressed that she had “always dreamed” of marriage and motherhood alongside her professional pursuits. “My success came quite early in life. This meant that by the time I met my partner, I had reached a point where if pregnancy happened, I would welcome having a child,” she explained.
“I feel blessed that if I take a break from acting now, it won’t necessarily mean the end of my career. But yes, this has always been something I’ve wanted.”
Their Life Together
The pair reside in a €2.8m property in north London’s Islington district, sharing their home with their terrier, Fran. Reports from 2020 indicated that Ronan purchased a two-bedroom west Cork cottage in Ballydehob, further cementing her connection to her Irish roots.
Creative Collaboration
Together, they produced the 2024 film adaptation of The Outrun, starring Ronan, who described her husband as “much more level-headed” than herself in their collaborative work.
“He keeps me grounded and acts as a voice of reason. But together, we’ve spent our lives on film sets, so we understand exactly what we’re asking of our actors. Our priority is always ensuring they feel comfortable,” she explained to USA Today.
Discussing potential future on-screen collaborations, she revealed: “While Jack was resistant to the idea for a while, I’ve managed to convince him it would be wonderful. I’m particularly keen to share a stage with him.”
Ronan’s Stellar Career
Ronan’s first Oscar nomination came at the remarkably young age of 13 in 2008 for Atonement. She subsequently received best actress nominations for her performances in Brooklyn (2016), Lady Bird (2018), and Little Women (2020), solidifying her status as one of Hollywood’s most talented young actresses.
Her television debut occurred when she was just 10 years old, appearing on Gerry Ryan’s radio show where she competed for a family vacation to Florida. She successfully secured the prize by performing her rendition of the Gingerbread Man character from the animated film Shrek.
