How to Eliminate Underarm Odor: Easy Tips for Staying Fresh

Simple and Effective Methods to Eliminate Underarm Odor and Keep You Feeling Fresh All Day

Have you ever waved to your neighbor or reached for something above your head, only to smell an unpleasant underarm odor, “Why do my armpits smell so bad”? If this has happened to you, chances are you wanted to find a quick solution to eliminate underarm odor and get rid of that armpit smell. While it would be ideal to simply shower whenever this happens, it’s not always feasible. Thankfully, there are simple methods to eliminate unpleasant odors like stinky armpits and prevent them from recurring.

What is the source of the underarm smell?

According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mary Alice Mina, underarm odor results from the combination of sweat and skin bacteria on the skin. Dr. Mina, who works at Baucom & Mina Derm Surgery, LLC and is also an adjunct assistant professor of dermatology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, explains that the bacteria breaks down sweat and creates acids, leading to a distinct sulfur-like scent. This is why armpits smell and why sweat smells in general.

There are two main types of sweat glands, eccrine glands and apocrine, which are responsible for excreting sweat throughout the body. The apocrine glands are mainly located in areas like the armpits, groin, and scalp and are often the cause of the underarm odor, as explained by Dr. Mina, who also hosts The Skin Real podcast.

According to Dr. Mina, these sweat glands secrete a thicker sweat that contains fat. This sweat, when combined with bacteria on the skin, results in body odor and is what causes body odor.

What are the factors that contribute to underarm odor?

  1. Menopause: The decrease in estrogen during menopause can result in night sweats and hot flashes, causing an increase in sweat production. Additionally, women may experience higher levels of testosterone during this time, which could attract more bacteria to sweat, leading to underarm odor and making them wonder, “Why do my armpits smell so bad, female?” A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that those with higher testosterone levels had a stronger body odor.
  2. Certain health conditions: According to Dr. Mina, conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), cancer, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and metabolic disorders can contribute to or worsen body odor. Hyperhidrosis and overactive sweat glands are common causes of smelly armpits.
  3. Some medications: According to dermatologist and assistant professor Dr. Eva R. Parker, certain medications, such as antidepressants, migraine medication, prescription painkillers, and over-the-counter pain relievers (NSAIDs), can cause physiological changes that result in increased sweating and bad body odor.
  4. Stress: Dr. Mina explains that emotional stress can lead to higher levels of cortisol in the body, activating the apocrine glands and cause stress and sweating. A systematic review in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology found that stress-induced sweating can result in a higher sweat output from the apocrine glands, contributing to unpleasant underarm odor.

5 Simple Tricks to Eliminate Armpit Odor

You don’t have to suffer from unpleasant, malodorous underarms. Although many people instinctively turn to deodorant (refer to the guide below for the most effective type!), there are also alternative methods to combat funky smells, even without access to your preferred deodorant. Our specialists share their top tips on getting rid of armpit odor and making armpits, not smell.

1. Utilize a combination of antiperspirant and deodorant

According to Dr. Parker, a deodorant will simply cover up odors, while an antiperspirant-deodorant containing aluminum chloride is specifically designed to decrease sweat. For optimal results, a combination of both products is recommended for most individuals as the best deodorant for smelly armpit females.

It is essential to mention that according to Dr. Parker, clinical antiperspirant deodorants may be more efficient but come at a higher cost and may cause more irritation to the skin.

For optimal results, it is recommended to apply deodorant before going to bed. According to Dr. Mina, our sweat glands are less active during the night, allowing the active components to create a stronger barrier in the sweat ducts. This results in a decrease in sweat production the following day. However, it is also acceptable to continue using an antiperspirant deodorant in the morning and at night for extra protection.

Step 2: Switch to a Different Soap

It is important to note that maintaining good hygiene through regular bathing is the most effective method for eliminating armpit odor. Dr. Mina warns that neglecting proper hygiene can cause a buildup of sweat and bacteria, leading to an intensified smell and making you wonder “why do my armpits smell even with deodorant”.

According to Dr. Mina, using antibacterial soap during your shower can be beneficial. This type of soap can effectively eliminate bacteria from the skin, potentially preventing body odor. However, it is important to note that for some individuals, antibacterial soap can cause irritation or dryness. If this is a concern or if you have sensitive skin, consider using an antibacterial soap that also includes moisturizing ingredients. One option is the Dove Care & Protect Antibacterial Beauty Bar.

3. Cleanse with alcohol solution

Those small alcohol pads that the nurse applies on your arm before giving a shot can also be effective in eliminating armpit odor. According to Dr. Parker, the rubbing alcohol present in the pads can decrease the amount of bacteria and microbes responsible for the unpleasant smell. This method has been tried by many of her patients, and they have reported its success in reducing underarm odors.

To effectively eliminate armpit odor, Dr. Parker suggests using the pads by swiping them onto your skin once or twice a day. However, be aware that the alcohol in the pads may remove any antiperspirant deodorant you have applied, so it is recommended to reapply afterwards. You may want to try using the CareTouch Alcohol Prep Pads for this purpose.

4. Think about using your razor

If one desires, removing hair from the underarms can prevent bacteria from attaching to the hair and residing there. According to Dr. Parker, hair in the armpits can serve as a breeding ground for bacteria and lead to body odor, especially with a greater amount of hair.

Step 5: Put on a top that wicks away moisture

According to Dr. Parker, clothing crafted from moisture-wicking fabrics like polyester, nylon, or bamboo can pull moisture away from your skin. This enables the moisture to evaporate into the surrounding air through sweat evaporation, keeping you dry and reducing body odor. Breathable fabrics can also help reduce body odor.

Tips for Eliminating Underarm Odor: Prescription Solutions

If the previously mentioned solutions are not effective, your physician might prescribe antiperspirant and deodorant or a topical treatment to address excessive perspiration. If the topical medication is unsuccessful, oral medication may be prescribed.

According to Dr. Mina, injecting Botox injections in the underarm region can effectively control excessive sweating from hyperhidrosis or overactive sweat glands. The treatment works by inhibiting the nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands, decreasing sweat production. The number of injections needed may vary depending on the severity of the condition. Dr. Parker states that the effects of Botox for sweating typically last for 3 to 6 months in most individuals. As the FDA approves Botox for treating excessive sweating, it is usually covered by health insurance providers.

Iontophoresis: A Non-Invasive Alternative

Dr. Mina explains that iontophoresis is another approach to treating excessive sweating, which utilizes a medical device to pass a mild electric current through water or a damp pad. While some people may see a notable decrease in sweating after a few sessions, others may need multiple treatments to see improvement.

It’s also essential to consider diet and body odor. Certain sweat-causing foods can contribute to bad body odor. If you find yourself wondering, “Why do I smell bad even with good hygiene?” It may be worth examining your diet.

The information provided in this content should not be considered a replacement for professional medical advice or diagnosis. It is essential to always consult with your physician before embarking on any treatment plan for conditions like bromhidrosis or secondary hyperhidrosis or to determine how to remove the smell from underarms permanently or how to eliminate body odor internally.
