Iconic ‘Home Alone’ House in Winnetka Listed for $5.25 Million

Famous from the 1990 film, the 9,126 sq. ft. Georgian home features 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, and modern amenities, offering a chance to own a piece of cinematic history.

The iconic house in Winnetka, Illinois, famously known from the 1990 film “Home Alone,” is now on the market for the first time in over ten years, listed at $5.25 million. This offers potential buyers a unique opportunity to own a piece of cinematic history.

Prime Location in a Prestigious Neighborhood

Located in one of the priciest neighborhoods in the U.S., the redbrick Georgian residence, built in 1921, is situated at 671 Lincoln Avenue. Covering 9,126 square feet, it boasts four fireplaces, five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and features both outdoor and indoor hot tubs. The listing, which went live on Zillow, was highlighted by The Wall Street Journal.

Recognizable Features from the Classic Film

Fans of “Home Alone” will recognize parts of the house from the movie, particularly its exterior, the foyer, and the main staircase where the character Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, famously sledded. During the four-month filming period in 1990, the crew constructed an exterior staircase to the basement specifically for a scene where a burglar, portrayed by Daniel Stern, takes a tumble.

Interior Updates and Modern Amenities

Despite these recognizable features, much of the home’s interior differs from its on-screen portrayal, as most indoor scenes were filmed on sets built at a nearby high school. For example, while the movie depicts Kevin being sent to a daunting attic, the actual top floor contains a well-lit bedroom and a bathroom with a bathtub. The modernized kitchen now includes an open-floor plan with an attached sunroom, and the basement houses a basketball court and a home theater.

A Popular Tourist Attraction

The house’s connection to “Home Alone” has made it a popular attraction. The house quickly garnered attention after the film’s release in November 1990. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day of 1990, about 400 cars drove by to see the now-famous home, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times in January 1991. This influx of fans has continued over the years, with many stopping by to take photographs.

Continued Film Legacy

In addition to its role in “Home Alone,” the filmmakers revisited 671 Lincoln Avenue in 1991 to shoot scenes for the sequel, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” More recently, in 2021, the house was part of an Airbnb promotion where up to four fans could spend a night in the McCallister home, hosted by Devin Ratray, who played Kevin’s older brother, Buzz.

This historic home not only represents a significant piece of film history but also stands as a substantial and luxurious residence in a prestigious area. With its rich cinematic legacy and updated amenities, it presents a rare opportunity for both film enthusiasts and prospective homeowners.
