The Country Music Hall of Famer’s Hendersonville studio returns with modern upgrades while preserving the vintage charm that attracted countless legendary artists since 1968.

Ricky Skaggs, 70, a staple of country music and bluegrass since 1980, made a major career announcement on his Instagram and official website on Thursday, July 17 — his legendary recording studio in the greater Nashville area is reopening after Skaggs undertook an “extensive renovation” to the historic space. The studio, known for its vintage charm and connection to American roots music, has been a cornerstone of Skaggs’ career and his label, Skaggs Family Records.

“One of Middle Tennessee’s most historic recording studios will soon reopen for business following an extensive renovation,” reads the Instagram post.

It continues, “Skaggs Place Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee — founded by Country Music Hall of Fame member and Grand Ole Opry star Ricky Skaggs — has been shuttered for the past few years as the music legend renovated the recording space to bring in top-notch technology. It’s officially open for business on July 16.”

On his website, Skaggs details how he acquired the legendary recording studio in 1998 from Duane Allen of The Oak Ridge Boys, who had purchased the building in 1968. Skaggs extensively updated the space and transformed it into his own recording sanctuary. Notable artists who have recorded there include Dolly Parton, Charlie Daniels, Peter Frampton, Barry Gibb, Huey Lewis, Vince Gill, The Oak Ridge Boys, Marty Stuart, Alison Krauss, Bruce Hornsby, John Fogerty, John Anderson, Martina McBride, Seals & Crofts, The Gaither Vocal Band, Travis Tritt, and Patty Loveless, among many others. The studio has been a hub for both vocal sessions and instrumental recordings, capturing the essence of American roots music.

Skaggs decided a few years ago that because technology has “rapidly evolved over the years,” his studio needed a facelift. The extensive renovation was designed to preserve the studio’s vintage charm while upgrading its capabilities to meet modern recording needs.

Skaggs Shares His Vision for the Revitalized Space

“I’m so happy that my newly renovated recording studio, Skaggs Place, is finally ready to open up again,” said Skaggs in a statement. “We’ve done so many things to make it a first-class recording studio in the quiet little town of Hendersonville, Tennessee. It was already a studio where many Grammy Award-winning projects have been recorded, but with new improvements, like raising the ceiling height to 14 feet, new hardwood floors, amp lockers for live recordings, a new lighting system, a new HVAC system where air falls from overhead down into the room so it’s very quiet, just to name a few. It’s just a cool place to be creative.”

He added, “The studio has a great live room sound, and it’s big enough to record live videos as well. It’s also spacious enough that string sessions could easily fit into the cutting room. There are lots of old vintage photographs of many of my heroes and major influencers in the music industry. I believe anyone wanting to get away from downtown Nashville will find that Skaggs Place Studio will serve them well. I’m very excited for the future.”

A New Chapter for the Bluegrass Legend

Skaggs, who has been a prominent figure in the bluegrass and country music scenes for decades, has always been passionate about preserving the authenticity of American roots music. His wife, singer Sharon White, has often collaborated with him on various projects, adding to the family-oriented atmosphere of the studio. The reopening of Skaggs Place Studio marks a new chapter in the career of this Grand Ole Opry member, offering a state-of-the-art facility with the warmth and character that only a legendary recording studio can provide.
