Lingerie giant rebrands fashion event after six-year hiatus, promising a mix of familiar faces and new models representing evolving values.
Victoria Secret models, the iconic Victoria’s Secret angels, are stepping back onto the lingerie runway for the secret brand’s fashion event, ending a six-year pause of the once-popular Victoria’s Secret fashion show 2023.
The Tuesday night spectacle in New York marks the company’s first full-scale fashion pass since Victoria’s Secret leaders announced its cancellation in 2019. The show will feature a mix of established and rising supermodels, including returning stars like young Adriana Lima and Gigi Hadid and newcomers representing diversity and inclusivity.
A Response to Criticism and Changing Times
In 2019, the fashion world faced criticism amid body positivity, trans rights, and #MeToo movements, which saw modeling as a critical area for change. Eyebrow-raising comments from then-Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek intensified scrutiny and controversy.
“Should we have transgender people in the show? No. I don’t think we should,” Razek said then, using an outdated term for trans individuals. He also dismissed interest in seeing curvy women like Megan Lawley on the catwalk and called the show a “fantasy.” Razek later stepped down amid these and other issues.
Evolution of Values and Show Format
As Angels once again showcases the company’s runway fashions and women’s Secret underwear, Victoria’s Secret claims its values have evolved, and the Victoria’s Secret 2023 show will mirror these shifts. The VS Collective, a group of advisors focused on diversity, will help shape the event. The company stated in a May Instagram post: “We’ve seen your comments and listened. The Victoria’s Secret fashion show 2023 is BACK and will show who we are now, plus everything you love—the glitz, glamour, wings, music, and more!”
Star-Studded Lineup and New Faces
Former Victoria Secret stars like Jasmine Tookes and Adriana Lima (Adriana Lima height: 5′ 10″, Adriana Lima kids: 2) will return to the stage, along with plus-size model Ashley Graham. TV host and supermodel Tyra Banks, last seen on a Victoria’s Secret runway in 2005, will join the lineup.
Aiming to reach a broader audience, the fashion event will stream on Amazon Prime Video through Victoria’s Secret Amazon and newer platforms: YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Cher is rumored to perform at the Victoria’s Secret show afterward.
Financial Challenges and Market Competition
Victoria Secret has been financially challenging in recent years as mid-range lingerie competition has grown, and younger shoppers have lost interest in the brand. A successful revival of its yearly fashion event, which once drew 12.4 million viewers, could help the company regain some of its shrinking market share. The Victoria’s Secret order number and Victoria’s Secret sister size tools aim to make online shopping easier. All eyes will be on the Victoria’s Secret models 2024 to see if the rebranded show can serve as an effective marketing tool to win back customers.
