After a brief stint in the Air Force, Amos found his way to the William Morris Agency, where he made history as the first Black talent agent, working with renowned artists like The Supremes, Simon & Garfunkel, and Marvin Gaye.

Armed with a $25,000 loan and his family’s cherished cookie recipe, he opened the first Famous Amos cookie shop on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Undeterred by the setback, Amos continued to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams. He co-founded Uncle Wally’s Muffin Co. in 1992, which found success with its products nationwide. Additionally, Amos opened a new cookie shop called Chip & Cookie in Hawaii, where he continued to sell bite-sized cookies reminiscent of his original Famous Amos creations.

Amos was a successful entrepreneur and a passionate advocate for literacy and education. He co-founded Literacy Volunteers of America and served as a spokesperson for the organization for 24 years, using his platform to inspire others to embrace the power of reading. Demise and Passing
Amos’ remarkable life came to an end on August 1, 2022, at the age of 88. He passed away at his home in Honolulu, surrounded by his loving wife, Carol, after a battle with complications from dementia. His children and loved ones celebrated his remarkable life, describing him as a “great American success story” and a “source of Black pride” who inspired countless individuals with his boundless optimism and passion for his work.
