Luxury Meets Spirituality: The White Lotus Season 3 Explores Thai Culture and Eastern Philosophy at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui
The latest teaser trailer for the HBO series’ third installment, aptly titled “White Lotus Season 3, ” reveals that the White Lotus resorts face fresh challenges. The preview promises the same level of drama, hidden agendas, and biting social commentary as its predecessors—this time set against Thailand’s pristine beaches and luxurious resorts, including the renowned Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui.

Thematic Focus: Eastern Spirituality
The minute-and-a-half preview aligns with showrunner Mike White’s earlier hints that the Emmy-decorated series, which examined wealth disparity at a Hawaiian property in its debut season before exploring romantic entanglements in Sicily during its second run, would delve into Western fascination with Eastern spirituality and Thai culture in its upcoming chapter. The White Lotus season 3 hotel, rumoured to be inspired by the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui experience, serves as the backdrop for this exploration of Buddhist philosophy and wellness retreats.
Cast and Activities
The preview footage shows cast members Jason Isaacs, Walton Goggins, Carrie Coon, Leslie Bibb, Michelle Monaghan, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and others engaging in both revelry and “stress-relief meditation sessions” at what appears to be another White Lotus establishment in Thailand. Guests are seen enjoying yoga sessions, Muay Thai demonstrations, and indulging in traditional Thai massages. A Buddhist monk’s voice intones in the trailer, “People flee from suffering seeking pleasure, but when they arrive, they discover more suffering,” hinting at the spiritual journey awaiting the characters.

Returning Characters and Plot Hints
Season one standout Natasha Rothwell makes her comeback as Belinda, the unfortunate yet ambitious massage therapist, now in Thailand through an exchange initiative – “I’m beginning to sense something positive will emerge from this,” she remarks, possibly alluding to her involvement in the resort’s spa treatments and wellness programs. The trailer also includes a glimpse of a body bag – indicating that similar to previous seasons, death will claim another resort guest, perhaps during a snorkeling excursion or island exploration adventure.
Showrunner’s Vision
White had previously hinted that the third season, which he both penned and directed, might explore mortality and Western attraction to Eastern spiritual practices, potentially connecting with Belinda’s wellness journey. “Season one primarily focused on wealth, while season two cantered on sexuality,” he explained in an HBO segment following season two’s finale. “For White Lotus Season 3, I envision a satirical and humorous examination of death and Eastern religion and spirituality, set against the backdrop of Thailand’s rich cultural heritage.”
Production and Filming Locations
HBO collaborated with Thailand’s Tourism Authority to facilitate the production and marketing of the third season, which was shot earlier this year at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, plus various sites in Phuket, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and even Koh Phangan Island. The series showcases the luxury villas and secluded beaches that make the Four Seasons Samui a coveted destination. Viewers can expect to see characters visiting iconic landmarks such as Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, offering a glimpse into Thailand’s historical and spiritual significance through temple visits and cultural excursions.

Special Guest Star
Thai K-pop sensation Lalisa Manobal, known professionally as Lisa and the sole Thai member of Blackpink, will make her acting debut as a White Lotus employee—and apparently a resort performer—in the upcoming season. Her character is expected to introduce guests to Thai culinary traditions and gourmet Thai cuisine, adding an authentic touch to the resort experience.
Series Success and Awards
Since its 2021 premiere as a limited series, The White Lotus has maintained its status as a critical darling and awards powerhouse. Season one collected 20 Emmy nominations and secured 10 victories, including outstanding limited series. The second season, broadcast in 2022, garnered 23 nominations and claimed five wins, including awards for casting excellence and outstanding dramatic actress for audience favourite Jennifer Coolidge, the single cast member to appear in both seasons.
Anticipated Experiences and Activities
As anticipation builds for White Lotus Season 3, viewers can look forward to a captivating blend of luxury, intrigue, and cultural exploration. The series promises to showcase the stunning vistas of Thailand’s Gulf of Siam and delve into the complexities of Western tourists seeking enlightenment in the East. From sunset yoga sessions to treetop dining experiences, the White Lotus season 3 hotel is set to offer a visually stunning and thought-provoking journey through Thailand’s landscape and spiritual traditions.
According to Thailand Tatler, the new season will feature various activities for the characters and viewers to explore vicariously. Guests may embark on private yacht charters to discover hidden coves, visit an elephant sanctuary to connect with these majestic creatures or venture into hill tribe villages for an authentic cultural experience. The wellness retreat aspect of the resort will be prominently featured, with traditional Thai massage playing a central role in the characters’ journey toward relaxation and self-discovery.
